A statistical understanding of nucleation

چکیده
In order to study a stochastic phenomenon such as nucleation it is necessary to collect a large enough set of nucleation data to obtain nucleation statistics. This is done by performing nucleation experiments with the same solution under exactly the same conditions many times N (N&150—300). Such an experiment, based on simultaneous levitation of N&150—300 identical microdroplets (1—20 lm in diameter) of supersaturated solutions in a solvent atmosphere, is possible by employing the linear quadrupole electrodynamic levitator trap (LQELT). The LQELT is supplemented with a special optical system which is based on scattering of monochromatic polarized light. This will enable fast observation of nucleation and, thus, induction times in each of the levitated microdroplets. The N different induction times, counted from the moment t 0 at which supersaturation is established are recorded. This data provides nucleation statistics (induction time statistics). The numerical and analytical studies of nucleation statistics and parameters provide an insight into statistical properties of the underlying nucleation phenomenon. ( 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Population Balance Modelling of Zirconia Nanoparticles in Supercritical Water Hydrothermal Synthesis
Like any other precipitation process, in supercritical water hydrothermal synthesis (SWHS), the need to improve product quality and minimize production cost requires understanding and optimization of Particle Size Distribution (PSD). In this work, using Population Balance Equation (PBE) containing nucleation and growth terms, the reactive precipitation of zirconia nanoparticles prepared by ...
متن کاملDamage Behavior in Modern Automotive High Strength Dual Phase Steels During Uniaxial Tensile Deformation
In the present research, damage mechanisms during room temperature uniaxial tensile testing of two different modern high strength dual phase steels,DP780 and DP980, were studied. Detailed microstructural characterization of the strained and sectioned samples was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results revealed that interface decohesion, especially at the triple junctions of...
متن کاملAvailability Analysis For Heterogeneous Nucleation In A Uniform Electric Field
Industrial demands for more compact heat exchangers are a motivation to find new technology features. Electrohydrodynamics (EHD) is introduced as a promising phenomenon for heat transfer enhancement mechanisms. Similar to any new technology, EHD has not been understood completely yet and requires more fundamental studies. In boiling phase change phenomena, nucleation is the dominant mechanism i...
متن کاملAn empirical technique for prediction of nucleation mechanism and interfacial tension of potassium chloride nanoparticles
Prediction of the nucleation mechanism is one of the most critical factors in the design of a crystallization system. Information about the nucleation mechanism helps to control the size, shape, size distribution, and purity of the produced crystals. When the crystallization method is used for producing nanoparticles, the nucleation mechanism should be predicted. In this study, an empirical cor...
متن کاملNucleation of a new phase on a surface that is changing irreversibly with time.
Nucleation of a new phase almost always starts at a surface. This surface is almost always assumed not to change with time. However, surfaces can roughen, partially dissolve, and change chemically with time. Each of these irreversible changes will change the nucleation rate at the surface, resulting in a time-dependent nucleation rate. Here we use a simple model to show that partial surface dis...
